Windows Vista - Wireless Router - Cable Broadband - Internet Access - Hathway Chennai.

I could not think of a better title.. coz it is as complex as the process of enabling a network connection in windows vista to access wireless networks.

Objective
To enable a DELL Inspiron laptop powered with in built Wireless Adapter to access internet via a wireless router connected to a Cable Modem.

Things we had
Laptop : DELL Inspiron with DELL Wireless Adapter, with Windows Vista Home.
Wireless Router : DLink Airplus G, model number : DI-545 (4 port switch + wireless router).
CableModem : WebStar Cable Modem (ISP : Hathway, Chennai).

What you should do to access Internet?
We did a lot of trial and error method to enable access. All we did end up in doing was The connection from Laptop to Wireless Router was enabled. But from Wireless Router to Internet was not enabled.

So what's the solution? Well, its damn simple. You need to mirror the IP/DNS number from the cable modem, to your Wireless Router.

Type 192.168.0.1 in your web browser. Type the admin user name (usually 'admin') and password (usually no password, unless you specifically set it). This will open the console web interface of the wireless router. Go to a section which has settings for Wireless (usually named as 'Wireless') connections. Under that, select Static IP. Now enter the IP, Primary and Secondary DNS numbers as specified by your Hathway ISP. Sometimes you need to call Hathway customer care to obtain the numbers. After entering the numbers, save the settings and you wireless router will restart.

1. After doing this, open your "Network and Sharing Window" in vista. You can see your wireless profile section.
2. Click on the "View Status" link to bring up the status window.
3. Locate the button called "Properties" and click it.
4.In the opening window, locate an entry similar to "xxxx..x..x....TCP/IP v4", select it and click "Properties" button below.
5. In the upcoming window, type the same IP, Primary DNS and Secondary DNS numbers as told by your customer support executive.
6. Close all and reboot the computer, wireless router and cabel modem.
7. Upon restarting, open your browser and you should be able to access the internet. :-)

You should call Hathway customer support to get the number or get the things done.Vista is kinda bad in allowing users to create a wireless profile, coz it creates a lot of confusions. Even if you click the cancel button in the middle of the process, it will close the whole "Network and Sharing Window". You need to start from scratch again. Also do not rely on the "Diagnose this problem" option. It totally sucks coz it does nothing. Just a marketing flix to create a "Vista is user friendly" experience.

Tip : When you create your wireless profile in Vista, make sure you use shared access with WEP password. Otherwise, other users may intrude inside your wireless spectrum and steal the access.
